Safeway Rallies 40 CPGs for School Fundraiser

Posted on

Safeway taps its Safeway Club Card loyalty program to raise as much as $10 million for local schools.

The 10% Back to Schools effort involves 40 packaged goods companies who will donate 10% of sales on 1,700 participating brands bought by Safeway Club cardholders.

Shoppers earn “school dollars” that accrue on their Safeway Club account; when the promo ends Sept. 6, shoppers get a final donation receipt totaling their school dollars to take or mail to the school of their choice. Schools redeem the receipts online. (There is no per-school cap on donations. Shoppers get a reward certificate the first time they shop after Sept. 6, with a redemption code and total contribution amount. Schools have until Oct. 11 to redeem. Schools get a check from Safeway in December.

Shoppers who already make school donations via Safeway’s eScrip prescription-drug rebate program can have their 10% Back to Schools donations automatically sent to their registered eScrip school or organization.

An on-shelf tag with a 10% Back to Schools icon marks qualifying products at shelf. The program runs in Safeway’s 1,582 U.S. stores from July 20 through Sept. 6.
