Safeway, Inc. this week named James White its senior VP-corporate brands for all its grocery chains.
White will oversee marketing, manufacturing, finance and outside sales for Safeway’s private-label brands, led by Safeway Select, across its 1,801 stores in North America.
White had been senior VP-business development for North America at Gillette Co., and earlier spent 15 years at Nestlé Purina Petcare where he helped build Purina’s private-label pet food business. He joins Safeway this week or next, as Procter & Gamble completes its purchase of Gillette.
Separately, Pleasanton, CA-based Safeway is donating 10,000 American Red Cross Emergency Preparedness Kits for low-income families across California. The Red Cross and California Office of Emergency Preparedness will distribute the kits, which include blankets, rain ponchos, light sticks, flashlight and batteries, water containers and a personal first aid kit. The donation is worth about $500,000, per Safeway.
Safeway partnered with the State of California earlier this year to help prep Californians for disasters, selling emergency preparedness kits in nearly 600 Safeway, Vons and Pavilions stores across the state, airing PSAs in-store and running educational messages in its print ads.
