Royal Mail Settles With Union, Averting Strike

Royal Mail and the U.K. Communication Workers Union have reached an agreement averting a postal workers strike in the country.

The tentative pact is being sent to union membership for ratification, according to the CWU.

The agreement calls for:

*A pay increase of 2.9% retroactive to July 3.

*Efficiency savings, which add an extra 1% to basic pensionable pay and weekday overtime, rates retroactive to June 5.

*Pension investment with no change to retirement age or staff contributions, dependent on government investment.

* Job security, with no compulsory redundancies and no compulsory change from full to part time work.

According to news reports, the union did agree to lift its cap of three pieces of door-drops delivered a week, thus increasing availability to advertisers and to allow Royal Mail to try more efficient ways of doing things across the operation.
