ROSALIND RESNICK CONSIDERING COMEBACK: SOURCES

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

(Magilla Marketing) Rosalind Resnick, one of the most recognizable names in the e-mail industry from the dot-com heydays, is considering getting back into online marketing, according to a well placed source.

However, she is reportedly not necessarily considering getting back into e-mail, Magilla Marketing has learned.

Resnick has been questioning people who are still in the business to see where current opportunities lie, a source who asked to remain anonymous said.

Reached on her cell phone, Resnick said, “I loved Internet marketing and never stopped loving Internet marketing” but that she could “neither confirm nor deny” whether she is contemplating a move back into the industry.

Still, if Resnick wants back into the business, it’s safe t won’t have to beg anyone for a job.

Resnick co-founded NetCreations in 1995 as a two-person start-up and sold it in February 2001 to SEAT Pagine Gialle, a European Web and yellow pages advertising firm, for a reported $111 million. She reportedly walked away from the deal with $40 million.

Still, if Resnick wants back into the business, it’s safe to say she won’t have to beg anyone for a job.

Resnick co-founded NetCreations in 1995 as a two-person start-up and sold it in February 2001 to SEAT Pagine Gialle, a European Web and yellow pages advertising firm, for a reported $111 million. She reportedly walked away from the deal with $40 million.

Resnick was well known in the mid- to late 90s for her outspoken views against opt-out e-mail marketing. She exasperated more than a few in the traditional direct marketing industry by telling them that opt-out prospecting wasn’t an acceptable e-mail tactic.

Resnick is believed to have coined the term “double opt-in” where a person who signs up to be on an e-mail list must respond to a confirmation e-mail in order to remain on the list.

Many e-mail marketers argued that so-called double opt in was too arduous a process for profitable list building.

However, as a result of Resnick’s unwavering stand on the issue, her lists had a reputation of being some of the cleanest in the industry.

Resnick stayed on as chief executive of NetCreations after its sale, but left by the end of 2001 after new management began to experiment with less strict methods of e-mail address gathering.

E-mail services provider Return Path bought NetCreations in June 2004.

Since leaving NetCreations, Resnick has been running a consulting business for start-up companies and investing in real estate.
