Red Bull Buys MLS Teams for $50 million

Red Bull, the energy drink brand, has agreed to buy the Major League Soccer’s MetroStars in a deal that could reach a reported $50 million.

Anschutz Entertainment Group, the owners of the MetroStars, sealed the deal last Thursday to sell the team to Red Bull Co. Ltd.

The deal calls for Red Bull to gain naming rights to a new stadium the team hopes to build in Harrison, NJ. Red Bull will have a 50% ownership in the stadium, news reports said.

The team will be renamed the New York Red Bulls as of the upcoming 2006 season, Red Bull said.

Red Bull is based in Austria, Vienna, but has an office in Hoboken, NJ.

If completed, the deal would become the highest price every paid for a MLS team, The Daily News reported.

Red Bull is also involved with NASCAR, motor cross and other sports.
