Quebecor Axes 700 in Two Facilities

Quebecor World Inc. has laid off about 700 employees from its plants in North Haven, CT and Etobicoke, Ontario.

The North Haven facility will be closed by the end of the second quarter and the Etobicoke plant will be significantly downsized, the company said.

The Islington facility produces catalogs, retail flyers and binds directories. It will continue to bind directories and keep about 60 full-time positions.

The North Haven facility primarily prints general commercial material. Volume from both plants will be relocated to newer, larger facilities equipped with newer technology, the company said.

Quebecor said it would provide these people with outplacement services and information on opportunities in other comp company facilities.

The Montreal firm said these measures are part of its global retooling and restructuring program launched three years ago.

Earlier this year, Quebecor was granted protection from its creditors under Canadian law. Several of the firms U.S. subsidiaries are covered by the filing, which was heard and ruled on by the Quebec Superior Court (Direct Newsline, Jan. 23).

Additionally, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in New York.
