In anticipation of expected level four Hurricane Rita, the Postal Service has suspended drop shipments in several areas along the Gulf Coast of Texas.
As of Thursday morning, drop shipments were suspended into Texas 3-digit ZIP Codes 770,773, 774, 775, 779, 783, 784 and 785 due to the emergency evacuations of these areas, with mailers redirected to the other postal facilities in North Houston and San Antonio.
Drop shipments to 773, 774 and 775 may be dropped at the North Houston Processing and Distribution Center, those to 770 may be dropped at the Houston GPO and those intended for 779, 783, 784 and 785 should be redirected to SCF 782 in San Antonio. Retail and delivery service in the following 3-digit Texas ZIP Code ranges are suspended: 773, 774, 775, 779, 783, 784 and 785.
The U.S. Postal Service lifted its suspension of standard and periodicals mail for the 704 ZIP Code region in Louisiana, and drop shipments to ZIP Code 704 are being accepted. However, appointments are required before any drop shipments can occur.
The USPS is still not accepting any standard or periodicals mail in the Mississippi 395 and Louisiana 700 and 701 ZIPs. Drop shipments are resumed by appointment only in ZIP Codes 369, 393, 394 and 396.
Periodicals and news publications formerly dropped at the Destination Area Distribution Center (DADC) entry level into the Area Distribution Center New Orleans LA 700 zip should now be dropped at the Bulk Mail Center in Memphis TN 38999, excluding any mail for ZIP codes where service is suspended.
Separately, the governor of Louisiana declared a state of emergency to deal with the imminent threat of Hurricane Rita, and prohibited all telemarketing calls to residents, including solicitations for charitable organizations. Only the American Red Cross is exempt. This prohibition will remain in effect until Oct. 20, unless terminated earlier.
