Playboy Reports Quarterly Loss

Playboy Enterprises Inc., the Chicago-based publisher and direct marketer, reported a net loss of$8 million, for the quarter ended Dec. 31, a huge increase over $200,000 for the same period a year earlier.

Fourth quarter 2000 revenues declined 14% to $79.5 million from $92.4 million in last year’s fourth quarter, which Playboy attributed to the sale of its Critics’ Choice Video catalog last October.

For the quarter, the company’s catalog group reported earnings before income taxes and depreciation of $0.3 million, down from $1.6 million in the prior year’s quarter. Revenues fell to $4.2 million from $16.5 million in the 1999 fourth quarter. The company said it is in the process of selling its Collectors’ Choice Music catalog.
