J. C. Penney Co. Inc. reported catalog sales of $471 million for the five weeks ended March 30, a 22.5% decline from $630 million for the same period one year ago.
The cataloger and retailer attributed the decline to the elimination of unprofitable promotional events and media which drove sales through last year’s first quarter.
Comparable department store sales of $1.3 billion rose 6.8% from $1.2 billion last year.
