Papa John’s Pitching NCAA Tix with Text Ordering

Posted on by Chief Marketer Staff

Papa John’s is trying to raise the collective pizza consciousness of basketball fans with a sweepstakes offering tickets to the National Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Tournament semi-finals and championship games.

The company is designated the “Official Delivery Pizza of NCAA March Madness” in a partnership with Coca-Cola, which will promote Coke Zero.

Fans can take a shot at a pair of tickets for the NCAA tourney climax by registering at http://www.papajohns/hoops daily or by texting HOOPS to 47272 now through March 16.

The texting option is intended to build awareness about ordering pies that way. Fans ordered 750,000 pizzas online during last year’s tourney. But however they’re ordered, Papa John’s is looking to improve on the 10 million pizzas it sold in the first two weeks of last year’s tournament.

“Papa John’s wants to be where the fans are, and the fans are watching basketball,” Papa John’s spokeswoman Tish Muldoon said.

Coca-Cola’s existing relationship with the NCAA was the key to enabling Papa John’s to attain official delivery pizza status.

Along from trumpeting the NCAA sweeps on its Web site, Papa John’s is sending out e-blasts and also using in-store signage to promote the contest and the tourney.
