Online Sales to Double by 2010: Forrester

U.S. online retail sales will more than double over the next six years, reaching $316 billion by 2010, according to Forrester Research.

E-commerce growth will account for 12% of total retail sales in 2010, up from nearly 7% in 2004, according to Forrester. Consumers are becoming adept at-home shoppers and retailers are making it easier for the sites to be responsive to the customers’ needs. “Significant behavioral changes by consumers and retailers will fuel online retail growth over the next six years,” says Forrester senior analyst Carrie Johnson.

Most online retail categories will grow between 10% and 20%. While customers are staying inside and online to shop for products, the categories of products they’re purchasing include tools, hardware, and garden supplies.
