Over one million America Online members have entered a sweepstakes to win a Porsche Boxter seized from a spammer.
AOL reported that during the first 24 hours of the sweepstakes on March 30, entries were being processed at a rate of several hundred per minute. The promotion has generated three million page views after being showcased on AOL’s “Welcome” screen.
AOL seized the car at the successful conclusion of a legal action taken against the spammer, who was caught thanks to members reporting spam.
“One million members entered into this sweepstakes is also one million reasons for spammers to take note,” said Randall Boe, executive vice president and general counsel of AOL, in a statement. “This program is an incredible display of the cooperation that exists between AOL and our members when it comes to battling junk e-mail, and it shows that members are clearly keen to fight back against spammers.”
The sweepstakes concluded Thursday evening.
