Mail processing equipment at an Eatontown, NJ postal processing facility will be equipped with a biohazard detection system that will sound an alarm if it senses the presence of anthrax, according to the Holmdel, NJ, Independent.
The new system will be installed on all the plants four mail-canceling machines beginning Aug. 14.
The regional facility handles all mail for ZIP codes with the prefixes 077 and 087, which originate in Monmouth and northern Ocean counties, according to spokesman George B. Flood.
That amounts to 450,000 pieces of mail per day.
USPS officials said it would install systems at 283 postal processing centers nationwide by the end of 2005. He said the postal service has asked Congress to help defray the $799 million cost of installing the detection systems.
