Net Shopping Grows 35% As Unique Visitors Increase

More than 63 million individuals visited the Internet in Aug. 1999, up 11.5% from 56.6 million a year earlier, according to a new study. The biggest activity came among those who shopped on the ‘Net: 42.5 million did so, up 35% from the 31.4 million who did so in Aug. 1998.

Media Metrix, a New York-based Internet and digital media measurement firm, reports these findings in its “Top 50 At Home and At Work Combined Digital Media and Web Audience” ratings for August 1999. The company’s research also showed that travel-related sites had the second-largest increase, jumping 29% from 16.7 million to 21.5 million unique visitors.

Adult content sites, which showed an increase of only 4.6%, from 19.1 million to 20 million unique visitors, were the category with the smallest growth rate during the year.

The company defines unique visitors as the number of total users who visited a given Web site or online property once during the month. Visitors are only counted once, regardless of the number of visits to the sites.
