According to Mobitrove, which delivers data, research, case studies and other information to the mobile marketing industry, total spending on U.S. mobile marketing was $9.3 billion in 2010. This number is set to explode to $56.5 billion in 2015.

Total mobile marketing = total mobile advertising + total mobile promotions, according to Mobitrove, which cites Borrell Associates figures. “Advertising in the United States market is comprised of both local and national advertisers,” Mobitrove notes. “Promotions in the United States market are offers given by both local and national businesses.”

In 2010, total local mobile advertising was $505 million, while total national mobile advertising was $5.8 billion, meaning a total of $6.3 billion was spent on mobile advertising.

Local mobile promotions in 2010 totaled $106 million, while national mobile promotions totaled $2.9 billion, meaning a total of $3.0 billion was spent on mobile promotions.

In 2015, local mobile promotions are expected to pull in $1.7 billion, while national mobile promotions are expected to get $14.1 billion, for a total of $15.8 billion spent on total mobile promotions.

According to Mobitrove, in 2015, SMS will be the biggest mobile advertising delivery method, accounting for $17.0 billion of spending. Browsers will follow with $10.4 billion, while apps will account for $8.1 billion of spending. Email will account for $3.9 billion and games will account for $1.4 billion.

For promotions, apps will account for $7.2 billion of spending, followed by browsers with $3.3 billion, email with $2.7 billion, SMS with $2.6 billion and games with $26 million.
