Charlie Bell, who was appointed McDonald’s President-CEO last month after the sudden death of CEO James Cantalupo, was diagnosed with colorectal cancer on May 3. Bell, 43, underwent surgery on May 5 and the company expects his recuperation period to be brief. “Mr. Bell remains president and chief executive officer. He has expressed great confidence in his management team’s ability to stay focused and continue the momentum that is revitalizing McDonald’s business results,” said a company statement. Those business results include the launch a global marketing initiative to provide healthier choices on McDonald’s menus around the world and promote more active lifestyles. During a conference call with analysts on April 28, Bell said he intended to continue executing the business strategy that he and Cantalupo had outlined for McDonald’s turnaround, including new products and significant cost-cutting.
