Mailers Council, DMA Support Postal Commission Bill

At least two mailer organizations have urged the Senate to pass a bill to create a presidential commission to study the financially strapped U.S. Postal Service.

The Mailers Council, which represents 36 corporations, nonprofit organizations and mailing associations, and the Direct Marketing Association called on the Senate to pass S 2754, a bill that asks the White House to create the commission to evaluate the USPS.

The bill, introduced by Senator Susan M. Collins (R-ME), would also mandate recommendations “to make the USPS a viable 21st century enterprise within 15 months.”

This bill would have President Bush create an 11-member commission whose members could not include postal employees, managers or competitors and must include at least one postal union representative.

Collins introduced draft legislation for this bill last week (DIRECT Newsline, July 23).
