Linux Will Overtake Windows in Mobile Realm

ABI Research recently predicted that Mobile Linux will outdo Microsoft Windows Mobile in the mobile Internet device (MID) market by 2013. Linux, provided by Moblin, LiMo, and Maemo, will outsell Windows mobile and other top operating systems.

While the MID market is small today, with just 305,000 MIDs expected to ship in 2008, it is expected to balloon to 39.6 million units in 2012.

Linux is expected to thrive in the relatively untapped environment. Key advantages in Linux’s favor in the MID market include “flexibility, customization and very positive cost comparison to Windows Mobile,” according to Stuart Carlaw, ABI’s research director.

LiMo, whose focus is primarily on mobile phones, unveiled seven new devices on Monday, adding to a stable that now includes 21 devices.
