[Re: Loose Cannon: And It’s One, Two, Three, What Are We Mailing For? DIRECT Newsline, February 18, 2003]:
Thanks for giving us the chance to respond to your Loose Cannon.
I must admit, though, that I’m not sure what you’re saying. If you’re saying that direct mail doesn’t work (because you didn’t jump up and enlist), that’s very strange from someone editing Direct Newsline.
If you’re advocating “mischievous” use of direct mail (as your father did with the recruitment mailings), that can result in high and unnecessary costs to many mailers.
No, what I think you’re doing is using your editorial perch to tell people you’re not happy that the U.S. Army is trained to “kill people and break things.” You’re telling people that if they want the economy to improve and to stop men and women being gassed in southern Iraq (?), then they should be marching against the war. Well and good, you have an opinion. But what does this have to do with direct marketing!!??
From where I sit (Jerusalem), Saddam Hussein is the most lethal threat in the neighborhood. He’s also keeping his own people from “being all they can be.” If the U.S., for its own reasons, wants to get rid of him, I’m the last one to say “no.”
