L.L. Bean Inc. has canceled its plans for a new call center at in Oakland, ME.
According to news reports, the move came two days ahead of today’s meeting with Gov. John E. Baldacci. Baldacci wanted to try to convince the company to stay at in that location.
L.L. Bean’s spokesman Rich Donaldson said that the pull- out was not prompted by problems with First Park itself, but described it as necessary to stop “sunken costs.”
Meanwhile, the company denied rumors that the apparel cataloger had won a successful bid on the Wal-Mart property in Waterville, which Wal-Mart is due to vacate early next year. Neither is L.L. Bean currently considering sites in New Hampshire or another state, Donaldson said.
