KMART PROMO SOFTENS STORE-CLOSING BLOW

Kmart Corp., Troy, MI, has launched Savings Are Here to Stay, a promotion designed to soften the blow as 318 of its stores close over the next few months. Starting this week, all stores — including those set to close — are distributing coupon books worth $150 for national and private-label goods. One coupon gives a $10 gift cert to shoppers who transfer a prescription from a closing store to another Kmart. Also, closing stores will give Register Reward Receipts to shoppers who spend $10 or more, to redeem for as much as $12 on a $100 purchase at another Kmart. (Closing stores also put maps of nearby remaining stores in all shopping bags.)

Kmart’s 1,500 remaining stores host a Savings Are Here To Stay sweeps that will award 20 $500 shopping sprees; shoppers enter in-store. Newspaper ads as well as in-store and parking-lot P-O-P support the total effort.

The campaign “is designed to give our loyal customers the incentive and information they need to transition to a new store, while assuring shoppers nationwide that Kmart remains open and ready for business,” says President-CEO Julian Day in a statement.
