John Collins Leaving NFL Post

NFL senior VP-marketing and sales John Collins will leave the post he has held since September 2000 to become president and CEO of one of its clubs, the Cleveland Browns. Collins begins his post with the Browns on May 1, but the NFL did not say when his last day of service with the league would be.

Collins was in charge of the league’s advertising and design, marketing, club services, market research, media planning and non-game traditional programming. He also served as VP-programming and sales for the NFL from 1996-1999.

Though Collins oversaw events for the league such as “NFL Kickoff Live From Times Square” in 2002, which won a PROMO PRO Award in 2003, he also was responsible for the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show event with MTV. The league and MTV received heavy criticism after performer Janet Jackson’s bare breast was exposed in front of some 20-million television viewers.

NFL VP-COO Roger Goodell said in a prepared statement that Collins has been a “terrific performer for the league.”
