J.C. Penney Catalog Sales Increase Slightly

J.C. Penney Company Inc. reported catalog sales up 0.6% for the four weeks ended May 24.

The above plan results were primarily the result of better print media and Internet sales, according to a company statement. Internet sales increased more than 50%.

For the month, catalog sales were $179 million, compared to $178 million in May 2002.

Sales for the first 17 weeks of the year are still down compared to 2002. Catalog sales for the period were $766 million, versus $838 million in the previous year’s 17 week period. Total sales were $9.78 billion, down from $9.99 billion in 2002.
