J.C. Penney Catalog Revenue Declines in December

Catalog sales continued falling for J.C. Penney Company, Inc. in December. They totaled $465 million, compared with $582 million during the same five-week period in 2000.

The Plano, TX-based retailer blamed the decline, in part, on the retail promotional environment.

E-commerce sales, which are included with catalog revenue, totaled $62 million, compared with $65 million in December 2000.

The firm reported department store sales of $2.6 billion, a 3.4% falloff from the previous year. Total company sales came in at $4.6 billion, an 0.5% increase.

These sales exceeded plan, the firm said.

For the nine weeks ended on Dec. 29, catalog sales totaled $760 million, a 25% decline from the prior year.
