iPads Won’t Replace Computers, Will Replace Kindles

According to a survey conducted by Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray, the majority of iPad buyers are already Apple users and nearly all of them do not plan on replacing their computers with the newfangled device.

The survey of 448 iPad buyers in New York City and Minneapolis found that 74 percent of iPad buyers were Mac users, while 26 percent were PC users.

Thirty-nine percent of buyers surveyed were going for the lower capacity (16GB) iPad, while 32 percent were going for the higher capacity (32GB) version and 28 percent were going for the highest capacity (64GB) version.

In response to the question “Will you use your computer in addition to your iPad?” 96 percent said “Yes, I’ll use both,” while 4 percent said “No, my iPad is replacing it.”

Ninety-two percent said they own an iPod, and 97 percent said they will use their iPad in addition to their iPod.

Meanwhile, 66 percent of respondents said they own an iPhone, while 99 percent of this group will use both their iPhone and iPad.

Interestingly enough, 13 percent of iPad buyers surveyed said they own a Kindle, with 58 percent of this group saying that the iPad will replace it.

Of all the uses for the iPad, 74 percent said they would surf the Web, 38 percent will read books, 34 percent will use e-mail, 26 percent will watch videos, 18 percent will play games or apps and 8 percent will listen to music.

Seventy-eight percent of respondents said they didn’t consider another gadget before deciding to buy the iPad, while 10 percent considered the Kindle, 6 percent considered a netbook and 4 percent considered a laptop.

“We believe that Apple has successfully carved out a new category of mobile devices between the smartphone and the laptop, apparently without cannibalizing its own iPhone and Mac sales,” Munster notes.

He forecasts that 5.6 million iPads will be sold in 2010, up from his original estimate of 2.7 million.
