Hurry Up and Wait

It’s not yet apparent whether this year’s extended presidential campaign will distract voters enough to depress direct mail response. But the signs are already clear that it’s going to distract one other important group of people: Legislators, who seem to have forgotten about postal reform.

We’ve lost track of all the delays. First, a bill was going to be introduced before Easter. Then it was the week after.

And now, as Richard Levey has reported, two congressional staffers have said there’s little chance the House will consider reform this year, although the Senate seems enthusiastic (see story on page 9).

Come on, guys. Are you serious about this?
