A new piece of research from professors from Georgia Tech and the University of Michigan has some keen insights into how to gain more followers on Twitter. The longitudinal study looked at 507 Twitter users and half-a-million of their tweets during the course of 15 months.
“Followers are Twitter’s most basic currency,” the report says. “Building an audience of followers can create access to a network of social ties, resources, and influence. Yet, little is understood about how to grow such an audience.”
Big Think analyzed the findings of the study to share four ways to lose followers and 13 ways to gain them.
Being negative, excessively using hashtags and being too self-referential will lead to a decline in followers. On the other hand, sharing information, tweeting in bursts and engaging with others are ways to gain followers.
