False-positive spam filtering at Hotmail nearly tripled in 2005 from 5.3% in the first quarter to 15.7% in the fourth quarter, according to e-mail service provider Lyris Technologies.

The news comes as almost every other provider is getting better at avoiding filtering e-mail people want.

Average deliverability of e-mail in the U.S. increased by 1% from 91% to 92% from the third quarter to the fourth quarter of 2005, according to e-mail service provider Lyris.

Also, according to Lyris, whether or not people get the messages varies widely from inbox provider to inbox provider. People with e-mail addresses with one of the top 10 providers in terms of deliverability were 21% more likely to get their permission-based e-mail than those using the bottom 10.

CNC.net is No. 1 in terms of false positives at 37.43% during the fourth quarter of 2005. However CNC.net has improved during the last year from 61.7% in the first quarter of 2005, according to Lyris.

The best service provider in terms of deliverability is Peoplepc.com with a 99.51% deliverability rate and no false positives.

Earthlink during the fourth quarter became a top 10 provider in terms of deliverability by improving 5% to 99.35%, putting it at No. 2. Earthlink also had zero false positives in the fourth quarter of 2005, according to Lyris.

Lyris’s fourth-quarter report covers 60,928 e-mail messages sent from Oct. 1 to Dec. 31 by 49 companies, according to Lyris.
