Holiday Shopping Nears $23 Billion Over Weekend

Holiday shopping over Thanksgiving weekend hit $22.8 billion, about 10% of the expected $220 billion for holiday sales this year.

The National Retail Federation reports that 133 million shoppers hit the stores over the weekend. About half (49%) bought clothes; 46% bought books, CDs, DVDs, videos and videogames; 31% bought electronics.

Most shoppers frequented discount stores (62% of consumers), followed by department stores (44% of shoppers) and specialty stores (41%). Nearly 30% of consumers did some of their shopping online.

Washington, DC-based NRF and BIGresearch, Worthington, OH, surveyed 4,665 shoppers Nov. 26-27; margin of error is 1.5%.
