Holiday E-Shoppers Make More Trips to Cyberstores: Study

Posted on

Online shoppers are booting up more frequently, making 33% more shopping trips during the week ending Dec. 4 than they did last year.

Last year, during the same time frame, shoppers visited retail sites 348.3 million times during the week. This year, the number hit 462.5 million, according to Nielsen//NetRatings Holiday eShopping Index.

“Online shopping has increased over last year because both new and experienced Internet buyers are not only researching products and comparing prices online before making a purchase, but they are also finding good holiday discounts online,” said Heather Dougherty, senior retail analysts, Nielsen//NetRatings, in a statement.

The fastest growing category was books/music/video, which saw visits jump by a whopping 238% when compared with week six of the 2004 holiday shopping season. The “vast selection” of titles release during the holiday was credited for the increase. Apparel ranked No. 2 with a 38% increase, while home and garden, toys/video games and retail rounded out the top five year-over-year fastest growing categories, each with 28% growth. Consumer electronics followed at 27%.
