Joybird’s mobile 3D Space Planner is an expansion of its desktop version and allows shoppers to view 3,500 furniture pieces in augmented reality.
Furniture brand Joybird has expanded its 3D product design feature to now include the mobile web. The tool, called 3D Space Planner, allows shoppers to view 3,500 of Joybird’s furniture pieces in augmented reality in the context of their own space, said Gerardo Ornelas, vice president and general manager for Joybird.
“Our mission was to make mobile furniture shopping as intuitive and rich as in our showrooms,” Ornelas said.
With augmented reality, shoppers will get a quick sense of the scale of the furniture piece in their home, Ornelas said. Shoppers can design spaces at home or with a store associate in one of is 12 showrooms.
Joybird, which is owned by furniture manufacturer La-Z-Boy, has offered a design tool on desktop for about five years. The brand expanded the tool to mobile after customers requested it. Plus, more than 70% of Joybird.com’s web traffic comes from mobile devices, making this tool a convenient option for the majority of its shoppers.

All of Joybird’s upholstery pieces are available to view in 3D, as the focus of the tool is to give shoppers an idea of how larger pieces will look in their rooms, Ornelas said. Decor items are not the focus of the design tool, and he declined to say how much of Joybird’s overall product catalog is available in 3D.
The brand is continually adding more of its products into the 3D planner, and Ornelas said the process is “fast,” without providing a time estimate.
“Joybird sells highly configurable products with upholstery customization options, so each product includes a geometry of the product plus all of the associated materials,” said a spokesperson at digital asset vendor 3D Cloud, which developed this technology for Joybird.
Joybird and 3D Cloud plan merchandise each quarter to allign the timeline for furniture pieces and their 3D assets, the spokesperson said.
It took a few months to develop this tool, Ornelas said. He declined to reveal costs.
