March was a prosperous month for many direct marketers posting sales Thursday, with the notable exception of Spiegel, which reported a 20% decrease in direct revenues.
* The Spiegel Group posted net sales of $130.2 million for fiscal March, a 17% decrease compared to net sales of $157.8 million for the five weeks ended March 29, 2003. For the thirteen weeks ended April 3, total sales declined 22 % to $322.4 million from $413.6 million in the same period last year. The company’s catalog and e-commerce sales decreased 20 % for the month compared to the same period last year, reflecting lower sales for the Eddie Bauer and Spiegel Catalogs, offset somewhat by sales growth for Newport News. A planned reduction in circulation hurt catalog sales for Eddie Bauer and Spiegel.
