According to Compete, the gap between Yahoo, the No. 2 site, and Facebook, the No. 3 site, continues to shrink. Other data show similar growth for Facebook, in terms of visitors and time spent on its site.
Compete’s latest figures peg Google atop the heap with 150 million unique visitors in December, up 2.9 percent from November.
Yahoo was second in December with 136.9 million unique visitors, up 1.9 percent month-over-month. Meanwhile, Facebook was third with 134.1 million unique visitors, up 1 percent month-over-month.
However, Yahoo has seen its audience shrink 1.48 percent during the last year, while Facebook has seen its audience boom 13.97 percent, compelling Compete to ask the question: “how much longer will Yahoo manage to hold the superior position over the social networking site?”
YouTube was fourth on the list with 117.2 million visitors, followed by Amazon with 92.5 million visitors.
Bing hopped up a spot to claim the No. 6 spot with 79.9 million visitors in December. According to Compete, Bing experienced 105.36 percent year-over-year growth, “by far the largest yearly growth among the top 50 sites.”
Wikipedia fell to seventh with 79.9 million visitors, followed by Live.com with 75 million visitors, MSN.com with 74.6 million visitors and eBay with 69.6 million visitors.
According to comScore, Facebook raced past Google and Yahoo to claim the title of the most time-consuming U.S. Web property in 2010.
The social networking site began the year behind Yahoo and Google, and ahead of Microsoft Sites and AOL. Around August, Facebook took the lead. Meanwhile, Google overtook Yahoo around June and finished 2010 as No. 2 behind Facebook.
For the week ending Saturday, Feb. 5, Facebook grabbed 64.18 percent of visits to social networking websites, according to Hitwise. YouTube trailed with 19.21 percent, while MySpace was third with 1.83 percent of visits to the industry’s websites.
According to Hitwise, Facebook was the top 20 website overall, with 10.48 percent of visits to all categories for the week ending Feb. 5. Google was second with 7.51 percent, followed by YouTube with 3.14 percent, Yahoo Mail with 3.10 percent and Yahoo with 2.40 percent.
