New rules being considered in Europe could hurt direct marketers.
A proposed unfair-practices law drafted by the European Commission would prohibit companies from making persistent phone calls or home visits, according to Financial Times.
It would also restrict inertia selling, or billing consumers for products they were sent but did not request.
The law would also mandate that firms refrain from targeting consumers who have lost a family member or suffered an illness with offers linked to those events, Financial Times continues.
The bill, which is expected to be presented by the EC for action by the European Parliament next month, would also outlaw pyramid schemes, the paper adds.
