DMA Approves of Senate Draft Bill to Reform USPS

The Direct Marketing Association has put its stamp of approval on a Senate proposal to create a commission to reform the United States Postal Service.

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) on Monday introduced draft legislation that would establish the commission within 60 days and make recommendations within 15 months to the president and the government affairs committees of the House and Senate.

“We are doubly encouraged by the Senator’s swift response to calls for immediate action to avoid the calamitous possibility of not having a viable Postal Service in the near future,” said Jerry Cerasale, senior vice president of government affairs at the DMA.

He added that the three rate increases over the last 18 months will take almost $7 billion more from American consumers and businesses.

The commission’s central task would be to ensure the financial viability of the Postal Service–including entertaining proposals to transform the USPS into a private entity, government agency, or commercial government entity.

The oversight group would also increase the efficiency of the Post Office, and institute cost-cutting measures, better efficiency and technology.
