The Spam Is Out There
Our intrepid correspondent, who once wrote an e-mail to “The X-Files” supporting actor Dean Haglund (Richard “Ringo” Langley), recently received the following note (and attached photo) promoting Haglund’s spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”:
“Hey kids,
“I would love to take the time to individually send you this, but who’s got that kind of time?
“So here is as close to spam as you’ll get from deanx.com.
“Dean (and the other guys) are really busy shooting in Vancouver at this time. As a matter of fact, I nearly ran over [series co-star] Bruce Harwood yesterday in Blood Alley (Gastown, Vancouver). Great name for a location, eh? Dean thanks all of you for writing, and your support of ‘X-Files’ and ‘The Lone Gunmen.’ It’s going to be very cool.
“Billy (Dean’s secretary for now)”
Our correspondent notes (with amusement) that the subject line for this was Bulk Lone Gunman Promo. “At least they’re honest,” she says.
Did the bulk e-mail work? Well, she did watch the March 4 series premiere, although admittedly she had planned to even without the reminder. And she wasn’t alone: The premiere won its time slot among adults age 18 to 34 and 18 to 49, coming in second overall to Elisabeth Shue in “Amy & Isabelle.”
But will our colleague follow the show to its new Friday night time slot? Here she’s evasive: The show, she says, is its own best or worst marketer. If it’s good, she’ll keep watching.
Better start rethinking that “no individual e-mails” policy, Dean.
