J. Crew Group reported $76 million in sales for the four weeks ended Nov. 30, compared with $86.2 million for the four weeks ended Dec. 1, 2001. The New York-based catalog retailer attributed the decline partly to Thanksgiving’s later date this year, which cut into the pre-December-holiday buying season.
Direct sales plummeted 28.7%, from $35.6 million to $25.4 million. Within this category, Internet sales fell from $16.2 million to $13.9 million, and catalog sales dropped from $19.4 million to $11.5 million.
While total store sales rose from $38.5 million to $40.6 million, comparable store sales were off 4.7%. J. Crew opened 17 new stores this year, bringing its total up to 152 outlets.
