Employment growth in direct marketing outstrips that of overall US employment growth by 400%, according to a new study from the Direct Marketing Association.
Job growth in the United States is expanding at an annual rate of 1.3%. But jobs are being created in direct marketing fields at a rate of 4.7%, according the DMA’s Economic Impact study. In 2000, more than 14.7 million workers will be employed throughout the country as a result of direct marketing activities. Eight million of those will be in consumer direct marketing and 6.7 million in business-to-business marketing. By 2005, the total is forecast as increasing to 18.5 million.
Online jobs will lead the pack, with an annual growth rate of 36.3% through 2005. The more mature direct response radio and television industries are second and third, with growth rates of 5.8% and 4.4%, respectively.
California was the state hosting the greatest number of Internet related jobs, with 1.66 million, followed by New York (1 million), Texas (1 million), Florida (857,916), and Illinois (696.647).
