DHL Airways Chairman Dead at 59

DHL Airways chairman and CEO Joe O’Gorman died Saturday. He was 59.

O’Gorman died of a heart attack, according to news reports.

The board of directors named Vicki Bretthauer, the company’s senior vice president of operations, as acting CEO.

O’Gorman was recruited in March 2001 to lead the newly restructured company, which is 52% owned by Brussels, Belgium-based DHL International. German postal service Deutsche Post controls about 75% of DHL International.

He established a headquarters in Chicago and recruited a new executive management team for the airline, which operates a network of all cargo aircraft for DHL Worldwide Express and other cargo customers.

Before joining DHL, O’Gorman held senior management positions at several airlines during a 35-year career, DHL said, the senior operations executive at both United Airlines and US Airways. He was also chairman and CEO for Air Cal, Frontier Airlines, Aloha Airlines and Reno Air.
