Crandall: DM CEOs Earned 6% More In 1998 Than 1997

Chief executive officers of direct response companies with sales exceeding $25 million earned an median compensation — base salary as well as cash perquisites — of $413,100 in 1998, a 6% rise over the median compensation in 1997.

The results are among the early findings of a compensation survey of chief executive officers conducted by Hal Crandall, president of Crandall Associates Inc., a New York-based executive search firm specializing in recruiting direct marketing executives.

The survey also found that executives in direct marketing companies with $11 million to $25 million earned only $237,500. And at the far end of the scale, chief executive officers in companies with under $1 million in sales earned $108,000.

The survey, Crandall claims, is the first in the direct response industry. A total of 562 direct marketing chief executive officers participated.

The median sales of all the participating companies are $8 million and the median compensation for the chief executive officer is $195,000.

The full report, available from Crandall Associates, covers compensation in both public and private companies as well as a profile of the chief executive officer.
