Consumers Regain Confidence, But Fear Lingers: Study

Consumers have settled into a new shopper mentality. They may not be feeling anymore financially secure than they did six months ago, but they are confident enough to consider spending again…a little bit.

The number of shoppers browsing more and buying less dropped from 49% last fall to 35% according to a recent study, The Pulse Survey, conducted by WSL Strategic Retail, a marketing and retailing consultancy in New York City.

Most consumers are no longer putting off major purchases, with only 27% reporting they would put off such purchases, compared to 40% last fall.

The findings are encouraging despite the fact that 15% of respondents, the same percentage as last November, are still worried about losing their jobs even though 44% said they remain optimistic that their household’s financial situation will improve over the next year. Some 22% reported that their financial situation has improved.

The report is based on a national Internet survey of 1.161 consumers conducted May 5.
