Beginning this month, a new Samuel Adams craft beer will debut, chosen via a summer consumer contest.
More than 14,000 people voted to pick Samuel Adams Honey Porter and the winner of the 2006 Beer Lover’s Choice Contest. The Honey Porter won out over one other brew, Samuel Adams Smoked Lager. Smoked beers are relatively rare in the U.S. and Sam Adams wants to see what consumers think about the beer, the company said.
The votes were cast at more than 800 tasting events held across the country during August and September 2006. Honey Porter, a retired beer that was first brewed in 1994 and brought back because of requests from fans, won with 8,206 votes.
Samuel Adams kept a running schedule of the events at SamuelAdams.com so participants could easily find the tastings. Events were held in Boston, Chicago, Charleston, SC, Colorado Springs, CO, Dallas, Las Vegas, New York City, Phoenix, Washington, DC, and other locations. The firm took advantage of the events by sampling three other styles of beer.
In 2005, the first year the contest was held, 11,000 consumers helped the company select a new brew at more than 430 tasting events.
Honey Porter now becomes part of the Samuel Adams Brewmaster’s Collection, a mixed 12-pack that features a variety of Samuel Adam favorites.
