The Los Angeles Times claimed that ChoicePoint, which is under fire for having sold 145,000 consumer records to Nigerian scam artists during late 2004, had made a similar sale in 2002. According to the LA Times, ChoicePoint CEO Derek Smith had claimed that the recent sale was the first of its kind.
Associated Press reported that in 2002, a Nigerian brother-and-sister team were charged with posing as a legitimate business and making between 7,000 and 10,000 inquiries. The names were used to commit at least $1 million worth of fraud, AP reported.
Neither the AP nor the LA Times were able to reach ChoicePoint for comment on the older fraudulent purchase.
