Banta Corp., Menasha, WI, reported second quarter net earnings of 13.4 million, an improvement from the $12.5 million it realized in second quarter 2001. During the quarter it generated $333.5 million, down slightly from $338.7 million a year ago. The quarter ended June 29.
The company attributed part of its success to its consumer catalog business, which it said recorded impressive revenue gains during its traditionally slow second quarter, adding several new customers. Banta also said that productivity initiatives helped boost profits.
Counteracting this was direct marketers’ reluctance to launch new promotional campaigns, together with industry pricing pressures, reduced revenue and earnings at the corporation’s direct marketing units. Banta said that management expects print demand to strengthen during the second half of the year, but that competitive pricing may continue to affect results.
