AOL has hired Ted Cahall, former executive vice president and chief operating officer of Classmates.com, to lead its platforms business unit as executive vice president.

In his new position, Cahall will have responsibility for AOL Search, the company’s e-commerce, its publishing platform and tools, and the MapQuest service.

“We are delighted to have a seasoned business and technology executive on board to manage these important AOL platforms,” said AOL president and COO Ron Grant in a release. “Ted has a wealth of experience that will help us continue to improve our search, e-commerce and local offerings, extend our lead in online mapping services, and put real-time information in the hands of end users moments after it is published.”

Cahall directed operations at Renton WA-based Classmates.com, a social network for school alumni. He was also executive vice president of the Web services division of Classmates.com parent United Online, with oversight of the company’s Web-hosting brands, including Freeservers.com and the photo-sharing service PhotoSite.
