President Bush has signed legislation creating the national “do-not-call” list for telemarketers.
But Direct Marketing Association spokesman Louis Mastria was unsure if the entire law would eventually go through as it is now written since his group and several others have challenged certain provisions of it.
“We’ve asked the Federal Trade Commission for a two-month extension since it’s physically impossible to have everything ready in time,” he said.
He noted the DMA has yet to hear back from the FTC.
The bill allows the FTC to collect fees from telemarketers to fund the registry, which will cost about $16 million in its first year. The do-not-call program should begin operation by summer.
Separately, the DMA filed a lawsuit against the FTC last month on grounds the registry unlawfully restricts free speech.
