The Brazilian government is promoting safe sex during Carnival by giving away 10 million condoms.
The giveaway is part of the Health Ministry’s anti-AIDS campaign, themed “Nothing Gets Past a Condom.” That effort targets the 15% of Brazilians who don’t think condoms prevent AIDS, per Reuters.
Condom giveaways target poor and middle-class Brazilian men ages 18-39. The effort is timed to pre-Lenten festivities of Carnival, when revelers are more inclined to have casual sex. Catholic Church officials oppose condom distribution and condom-themed Carnival floats, according to Reuters.
