Foxwoods Plays Hoops Against Mohegan Sun

Posted on by Tim Parry

new-york-liberty-foxwoods-jersey.gifMan, what a huge morning to talk sports, with
Ken Griffey Jr. announcing his retirement,
a perfect game foiled with two out in the ninth on a blown call, and the
WNBA’s New York Liberty signing a deal to have a Foxwoods Resort Casino logo prominently placed on its jerseys.

Wait, what?

Yeah, it’s pretty funny. Foxwoods is the Southeastern Connecticut casino/resort rival to Mohegan Sun, which just happens to be the home of the New York Liberty’s biggest rival, the Connecticut Sun. Foxwoods doesn’t have an arena, but now they can advertise legally (I think) on Mohegan Sun property.

Will it get Sun fans to leave Mohegan Sun games against the an enjoy a tasty burger at the Foxwoods Fuddruckers? Probably not. But it means Foxwoods, which is suffering revenue-wise as a result of the recession, has a presence in Madison Square Garden during Liberty games.

The financials of the deal have not been reported, so who knows what kind of ROI Mohegan Sun will get.

The wonder of it all!

And we’re still talking the WNBA (just kidding, the sport does have a cult following in the New York and Connecticut markets):
