Beanies are Back at McDonald’s

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Happy Meal, McDonald’s is bringing back a coveted premium: The Beanie Baby.

Beginning July 23-Aug. 19 Ty Teenie Beanie Babies will be handed out with Happy Meals.

This time, the Beanies will reincarnate McDonald’s character icons as bears dressed up as Ronald McDonald, Birdie, Hamburglar and Grimace. A special bear will be emblazoned with the anniversary Happy Meal logo.

McDonald’s launched its first Teenie Beanie Baby Happy Meal promotion in April 1997, an event that lasted five weeks due to the volume of premiums purchased. (Typical Happy Meal promotion cycles consist of just four weeks.) The promotion sold out of 100 million Beanies in just 10 days, 25 days ahead of schedule. McD’s launched the Teenie Beanie Baby promotion three more times before finally retiring the Beanies in 2000.

Also in celebration of the anniversary, the physical appearance of the meal will change as well as the menu choices. As a test in the New York tri-state area, Happy Meals will feature nutritional information on packaging in a way that appeals to both parents and children. McD’s will also support physical activity programs like Get Moving with Ronald McDonald that teach children the importance of physical activity in everyday life.
