    TruGreen Companies LLC, a Memphis, TN-based landscaping firm, has hired Epsilon Data Management Inc. to develop a new customer acquisition direct marketing strategy for TruGreen’s ChemLawn lead generation program.

    Dani Nadel has been appointed executive vice president and managing director of Modem Media, an affiliate of Digitas Inc. Lynch will be based in the firm’s Norwalk, CT office. Nadel recently served as senior vice president of marketing with Modem Media’s sister agency Digitas LLC in New York.

    Verizon opened a new call center yesterday with an advanced fiber optic network in Hampton, VA. The center will provide customer service for consumer and business broadband service customers. Verizon expects to fully staff the center with 180 employees by the end of March. Verizon plans to open similar centers in Syracuse, NY; Providence, R.I. and Thousand Oaks, CA.

    Comedian Albert Owens used to say that most people have ESP — exaggerated self-praise. I recalled this comment recently when a plain white envelope, bearing live postage but no return address, showed up in my home mailbox. Not only were there no identifying characteristics on the outer envelope, but the bar code at the bottom had been hand-obliterated by a heavy black magic marker.
